Bangladesh: Female Secondary School Assistance Project

The following project was approved today by the World Bank's Board.

CREDIT AMOUNT: IDA -- US$120.9 million
TERMS: Grace period = 10 years; Maturity = 40 years
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The project will help improve both the quality and accessibility of girls' secondary education in rural Bangladesh. It will expand on a successful stipend program currently active in the country which gives girls from poor, rural families financial assistance to attend school. The new project will support the Government of Bangladesh's ongoing primary and secondary education reform efforts which are built on the understanding that improved education reaches beyond individuals to create multiple benefits in health and productivity that may impact the entire country's well being.
