Bangladesh: Primary Education Development Project II

WASHINGTON, February 24, 2004—The following project was approved today by the World Bank’s Board:

CREDIT AMOUNT: IDA-US$150 million

TERMS: Grace period = 10 years; Maturity = 40 years

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Primary Education Development Program will support Bangladesh’s recently developed Macro-Plan for primary education.  Activities include strengthening the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education and the Directorate of Primary Education at the central level, while increasing the authority and accountability for school performance at district, sub district and school levels.  At the local level, it will help strengthen school management committees, parent-teacher associations and the local communities. The program will also raise the quality of schooling by raising the quality of teaching, improving the curriculum and providing adequate physical facilities where they are lacking.  It will work to expand access to the very poor and disadvantaged children, including those with special needs. This project is part of a new, collaborative approach through which development partners, led by the Asian Development Bank, harmonize their assistance under a single national program rather than implement entirely separate projects, as in the past.  For more information, please call Zita Lichtenberg  (202) 458 7953 or e-mail: zlichtenberg@worldbank.org
